At Flying Solo our purpose is to provide a specialised Single Travel service for single like-minded people and for single parents with kids by entering into partnerships with some of the world’s best tour operators.

Single travel supplements make many holidays and destinations unaffordable to single travellers, but the good news is that with Flying Solo, no single supplement applies - thus making single travel affordable for all.

Flying Solo is a ‘one-stop’ travel company attending to your visas, air tickets, travel insurance, foreign exchange and is run by experts who are passionate about travel and who have many years experience in the industry; our founding members are Rike Frein von Ketelhodt Gratrix and Jule Fost.

Rike Freiin von Ketelhodt Gratrix:

Rike was born in Cape Town to German parents and went to Clarendon Girls High in the Eastern Cape.

After living in Europe and South America for many years, she returned to South Africa at the end of 1988 and joined Pentravel a year later. In 1992 she became a director and shareholder of the Pentravel Durban North and subsequently started her own travel agency Sure Ricatravel, which she sold in 2002. In 2004 Sure Travel Traders emerged for Independent Consultants - at present there are 20 consultants nationally.

Flying Solo is a concept in travel for single like-minded people and also for single parents with children as Rike understands that there is a market out there for such clients.

Andries van Schalkwyk:

Andries was born, and went to school in Durban. He studied at Unisa and Free State University obtaining his Bachelors and Masters Degrees.

While living in Kwazulu Natal, he excelled in sport and played 1st division Rugby and Cricket. He played Cricket for Natal Country District for 8 years and for the South African Country Districts for 4 years. He also represented the SACD team in England and Guernsey Island on a 2 month tour.

He was involved at the highest level in Education at various schools in Kwazulu Natal and the Southern Cape and also lectured in Stellenbosch. Whilst involved in Education, he started organizing tours abroad. On 5 different occasions between 1995 and 2003, he organized tours for groups of 80 clients at a time to visit and stay with families in Switzerland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and England.

In 2004, Andries ended his Education Career and was involved with other role players in establishing and building up the well-known four star Buffelsdrift Game Loge, which is situated only 6.5 km outside of Oudtshoorn on route to the world-renowned Cango Caves. Since then he has become a well-known figure in tourism circles, both nationally and internationally.

He annually attends tourism shows and workshops nationally in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg, as well as internationally in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, England, Ireland, China, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

Andries, therefore, has the knowledge and is well-equipped to provide any flying-solo client with the necessary information to make their trip an unforgettable experience.

Sonja Bekker:

Sonja was born in Ladysmith, Kwazulu Natal and matriculated at Outeniqua High School in George. She studied at Stellenbosch University and UNISA obtaining her Bachelors and Honors Degrees.

While at School Sonja obtained provincial colours for both Netball and Athletics. She also held various leadership positions.

Sonja started of her career in the tourism Industry by being part of the team who established and built up  Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, situated just outside Oudtshoorn. Here she also formed part of the marketing team that attended various tourism shows as well as being the events and weddings co-ordinator.

Thereafter she was in the teaching profession for 5 years. She is now part of the Sure Travel Traders group which subsequently led her to become involved full time in Flying Solo.

She has undertaken tours to France and America. Being young and vibrant she loves the opportunities that Flying Solo offers her to explore the world further and as such, help others do the same.
